Para musisi yang bisa masuk nominasi Grammy ke-61 ini adalah mereka yang merilis karya antara kurun waktu 1 Oktober 2017 hingga 30 September 2018.
Musisi yang paling banyak mendapatkan nominasi berasal dari genre hip hop, yakni Kendrick Lamar dengan 8 nominasi, termasuk 2 penghargaan utama yakni Record of the Year dan Song of the Year dengan "All the Stars".
Lamar juga memiliki kesempatan memenangkan Album of the Year tahun ini melalui "Black Panther: The Album".
Tahun lalu, Kendrick Lamar adalah musisi kedua yang memperoleh paling banyak penghargaan setelah Bruno Mars dengan total 5 trofi yakni Best Music Video untuk “Humble", Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance, Best Rap/Sung Performance untuk “Loyalty” featuring Rihanna, dan Best Rap Album.
